Eclectic Style
Many of the older homes are Victorian in style with red brick exteriors. You will also find traditional adobe casitas. The housing is varied in style and there are properties available to suit everyone! Outlying areas often offer larger lot sizes.
We have many great assets in Silver City and Grant County. A few of the highlights include Western New Mexico University and Gila Regional Medical Center.
Located in New Mexico’s southwest corner, Silver City isn’t the kind of place people just stumble onto. Silver miners came in the late 1800’s, and more recently the town’s Old-West eclectic charm and high-desert location made it a magnet for creative types. The historic downtown area is home to many restaurants that put New Mexico green chile to good use.
The Mining District
Rich Mining History
The “mining district” is comprised of the communities of Santa Clara, Bayard, Hurley, and Hanover. These communities reside near the Chino Mine. Homes in these communities tend to be smaller and older. However, many are more affordable than the nearby town of Silver City.
This area has a rich mining history. Apaches, Spaniards, Mexicans, and Americans have all obtained native copper and copper ore from this site. The present-day open-pit mining operation was begun in 1910.
Nearby is Fort Bayard Historic District. Fort Bayard, which was established in 1866 to station soldiers of the US Army in proximity to mining camps in the region is located next to Santa Clara. In subsequent years the fort was converted to an Army hospital, specializing in the treatment of tuberculosis and a US Veterans Hospital. Fort Bayard Medical Center, a long term care nursing facility is currently on part of the site. The property is maintained by the Village of Santa Clara and the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society.
Outlying Forest
Close Proximity
If you are looking for a community that is surrounded by public lands Grant County is your place! We are a few minutes drive from the Gila National Forest and an hour or so from the Gila Wilderness.
Many properties have forest boundaries or access points close by. These properties are typically on larger lot sizes with little to no zoning. Here you will find larger custom built homes, older ranch homes and many cabins of all sizes.
These properties are not as pricey as many other areas in the southwest that are located next to a forest. Take a look and see what is available to fit your needs!
